New NC Medicaid Plan Takes Effect March 20, 2006

Thanks to newly defined state Medicaid guidelines that will take effect March 20, professionals will be able to offer more comprehensive substance abuse services in the state of North Carolina, says Jennifer Mahan, director of policy and advocacy initiatives for the Mental Health Association in North Carolina.

“North Carolina will be able to provide more types of in-patient and out-patient services and more comprehensive treatment programs for those who are affected by substance abuse and its mental health components,” noted Mahan. “There will be a lot more options covered including prevention services, in-home services, non-medical services and detox services.”

The federal government works with North Carolina providing around 62% of federal funds to reimburse Medicaid health care costs including mental health and substance abuse services. A listing of the approved service definitions can be found at www.dhhs.state.nc.us/mhddsas.
