Thanks to newly defined state Medicaid guidelines that will take
effect March 20, professionals will be able to offer more
comprehensive substance abuse services in the state of North
Carolina, says Jennifer Mahan, director of policy and advocacy
initiatives for the Mental Health Association in North Carolina.
“North Carolina will be able to provide more types of in-patient
and out-patient services and more comprehensive treatment
programs for those who are affected by substance abuse and its
mental health components,” noted Mahan. “There will be a lot
more options covered including prevention services, in-home
services, non-medical services and detox services.”
The federal government works with North Carolina providing
around 62% of federal funds to reimburse Medicaid health care
costs including mental health and substance abuse services. A
listing of the approved service definitions can be found at
www.dhhs.state.nc.us/mhddsas.
