abuse prevention.
Dr. Rick Spurling, Assistant Superintendent of Mitchell County
Schools, will present the keynote session, Bully-Free Schools,
which will focus on the impact bullying has on student safety
and the increased risk factors associated with bullying. The
conference will feature workshops on the following:
- Internet and child safety
- What parents should know about teen partying

and communities
- Parent leaders who are successfully
mobilizing parents as partners to prevent substance abuse.
Workshop presenters will include representatives from the
Technical Services Unit of the Chapel Hill Police
Department, NC Community in Schools, Focus on the Family,
and the Partnership for a Drug-Free NC.

Families in Action, the NC Parent Network is a statewide
initiative that offers support and networking opportunities
to the increasing number of volunteers and substance abuse
prevention professionals who are working to help parents
prevent their children from using alcohol, tobacco, and
illegal drugs.
The network provides structure for the sharing of
information and ideas, and peer support for community groups
who are working to effectively involve parents as partners
in prevention, a strategy of the NC Strategic Prevention
Framework. Funding is provided through the Office of
Prevention and Early Intervention of the NC Division of
Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance
Abuse Services. Application is being made to the NC
