 Welcome to the first
online-only edition of The Next Step, North Carolina’s
substance abuse newsletter. The Partnership for a Drug-Free NC,
Inc. receives funding from Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA), the NC Department of Health
and Human Services, and the NC Division of Mental
Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Abuse to create and
distribute this quarterly publication.
Because
addiction is a family disease, we will address the following
main topics in 2006: Substance Abuse and Youth, Substance Abuse
and Spouses/Partners, Substance Abuse and Parents, Substance
Abuse and the Workplace/Community. We begin with Youth because
we all need to be concerned with the future of our children and
our communities. And…we can all make a difference. Please read
on to learn more.
As we strive to understand, prevent, and treat substance abuse,
it’s important to be informed. Our goal at The Next Step,
as it has been for the past 20 years, is to let you know the
issues. We will do our best to provide information that is
useful to clinicians, administrators, educators, policy makers,
and citizens of North Carolina. To keep this newsletter
manageable, in many cases we will introduce a topic, provide
general information, and then point you toward the sources that
can address the details.

subscribe link in the coming months, you will be able to access links to many
substance abuse information sources on the
drugfreenc.org website. In addition, we
will maintain a
calendar that lists upcoming trainings and events. If you would
like us to include your event, please email
editor@drugfreenc.org.

about your program, or other ideas.

you don’t personally know someone who suffers from the disease
of addiction, substance abuse affects all of us – financially,
