Welcome
to the spring/summer online edition of The Next Step,
North Carolina’s substance abuse newsletter. Partnership for a
Drug-Free NC, Inc. receives funding from the NC Department of Health
and Human Services to create and distribute this quarterly
publication.
As we strive to understand, prevent, and
treat substance abuse, it’s important to be informed. Our goal
at The Next Step is to let you know the issues. We will do
our best to provide information that is useful to clinicians,
administrators, educators, community leaders, and citizens of
North Carolina. To keep this newsletter manageable, in many
cases we will introduce a topic, provide general information,
and then point you toward the sources that can address the
details.
Our approach
Because we know that virtually everyone has
some sort of a tie to someone who struggles with addiction, the
four 2006 editions provide a 360 degree view of the
relationships we have with substance abusers. The last issue
looked at teens and young adults who use substances. This
edition focuses on the individuals in romantic relationships
with someone who abuses alcohol and/or drugs. In late summer we
will address how other family members are affected by a
substance abusers addiction. And finally, at the end of the
year we will explore the relationships between people who use
substances and their neighbors, friends, and co-workers.
Subscriptions and
resources
If you visit
The Next Step anytime,
you will be able to find links to many substance abuse
information sources. In addition, we maintain a calendar that
lists upcoming trainings and events. If you would like us to
include your event, please email
editor@drugfreenc.org. Please also use this email for topic
suggestions, information about your program, or other ideas.
Please forward this email to your friends,
family, and colleagues. They can register to receive it
directly at
The Next Step. Even if you don’t personally know
someone who suffers from the disease of addiction, substance
abuse affects all of us – through increase costs for medical and
car insurance, lost productivity and absenteeism, theft, courts,
social services, and law enforcement.
